Fused Glass

Glass fusing is the process of using high temperature to melt glass sheet pieces, glass rods, chips and particles (frit), to form designs, themes and pictures.  This is most often a multi-step process of arranging, layering, melting, and slumping into molds to make useful pieces and sculpture.  Temperatures vary; fusing glass together ranges from 1250 degrees to 1500 degrees, depending on desired effect. Slumping and draping into/onto ceramic bisque or stainess steel is typically done at around 1200 degrees.

Becasue of the variations in glass and how it reacts to temperature, no two pieces are alike.  It's always a dramatic event to open the kiln - there can be "happy accidents" where the design can go in a different direction :-).
